STAUNTON — (4:30 a.m.) Snow is coating some roadways early Monday morning in parts of the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. Periods of snowfall are expected to continue into Tuesday. Air and ground temperatures are well below freezing, so snow can accumulate quickly and cause slippery driving conditions.

The Virginia Department of Transportation advises motorists to pay close attention to weather forecasts, and get road conditions throughout their expected route at 511Virginia.org. Conditions could vary greatly throughout the 11-county VDOT Staunton District and other parts of Virginia.

VDOT Staunton District crews are plowing and treating roadways as needed. Interstate highways are plowed first, followed by primary roads and then secondary routes and subdivision streets.

Here are the road conditions as of 4:30 a.m. Monday:

Interstates 64 – Minor conditions in Augusta County. Clear conditions in Alleghany and Rockbridge counties.

Interstates 66 – Moderate conditions in Warren County.

Interstates 81 – Minor conditions in Augusta and Shenandoah counties. Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Rockingham and Frederick counties.

Primary and secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Warren County. Minor conditions in Highland, Augusta and Shenandoah counties. Clear conditions in Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Page, Frederick and Clarke counties.

VDOT provides statewide road conditions and traffic cameras at 511Virginia.org. 511 apps are available for Android and iOS devices. Roads with snow conditions are marked minor, moderate, severe or closed.

Road condition definitions:
Closed – Road is closed to all traffic.
Severe – drifting or partially blocked road.
Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway.
Minor – bare pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.  Drive with caution.
