Many Shenandoah Valley roads are slippery – with more snow expected this afternoon

STAUNTON — (11 a.m.) Periods of snow have created slick driving conditions on Monday throughout the Shenandoah Valley and Alleghany Highlands. Additional snowfall is expected to move into the region during the afternoon. Subfreezing temperatures will allow snow to accumulate quickly especially on bridges, overpasses and untreated surfaces. Those who must travel should use extreme caution.

Wintry precipitation is forecast for much of Virginia through early Tuesday, followed by bitterly cold temperatures. Motorists should check weather and road conditions for their intended route at 511Virginia.org, and be alert for changing conditions.

The Virginia Department of Transportation is plowing and treating roads throughout the 11-county Staunton District. Here are the conditions as of 11 a.m. Monday:

Interstates 64 – Minor conditions in Alleghany County. Clear conditions in Rockbridge and Augusta counties.

Interstates 66 – Clear conditions in Warren County.

Interstates 81 – Minor conditions in Rockingham County. Clear conditions in Rockbridge, Augusta, Shenandoah and Frederick counties.

Primary roads – Moderate conditions in Bath and Highland counties. Minor conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick, Clarke and Warren counties. Clear conditions in Augusta County.

Secondary roads – Moderate conditions in Bath, Highland, Augusta, Rockingham, Page, Shenandoah, Frederick and Clarke counties. Minor conditions in Alleghany, Rockbridge and Warren counties.
