The I-81 Corridor Improvement Program is working to complete over 60 improvements that include but are not limited to operational updates, exit extensions, acceleration and deceleration lanes, and auxiliary lanes to name a few. Western Rail Initiative – Multi-phase expansion of the Amtrak Northeast Corridor Service. In 2022, an additional round-trip train to Roanoke began departing Washington, D.C., in the morning and serving Alexandria, Burke, Manassas, Culpeper, Charlottesville, Lynchburg, and Roanoke. In 2025, Northeast Corridor service will be extended from Roanoke to Christiansburg upon completion of infrastructure improvements. The $257 million Western Rail Initiative includes $100 million in I-81 Corridor Improvement Program funds.
