There are over 60 program improvement initiatives happening across the Bristol, Salem, and Staunton Districts. Each improvement is categorized as one of the six types below.
One lane will widen between a specific mile marker on the northbound or southbound side. Where there were two lanes, the road would be widened to three.
Allows drivers additional time to get vehicle up to speed on the on and off ramp before merging onto I-81.
Installation of flashing chevron signs along specific curves to notify drivers of upcoming road.
An additional lane added allow trucks to ascend an incline at a safe speed and maintain regular traffic flow.
Auxiliary lanes will allow drivers additional time to speed up or slow down when merging on or off I-81.
Wider shoulder lanes increase safety of emergency vehicles and personal vehicles that pull off to the side of the road for car issues.
Operational improvements include new changeable message signs, new traffic cameras, extended Safety Service Patrols, detour route improvements, improved incident clearance and multimodal improvements.
